Coliseum city can happen, but mayor quan is going to have to find a way to get some public funding, I did not say it was fair, but that is how business works, I don't think quan wants to ask tax payers....don't blame her, however there are a lot of us that would say YES...So hopefully we have a vote soon, every city had crime and schools and I habent seen a change in Oakland for 25 yrs...so I don't want to hear it about othe priorities

@ Randy R-I hate to say that I completely disagree with you 100%. The best bet IS NOT for the Raiders to go back to L.A. 1. the NFL wants whatever team that eventually moves to L.A. to have an owner with deep pockets. Mark Davis does not have deep pockets. 2. The NFL is going to play a very HEAVY role in which team, if any, relocates to L.A. It doesn't matter if a team would like to up and move to L.A., the other NFL owners will make that decision. 3. Only one of the proposed L.A. stadiums (AEG's Farmers Field in downtown L.A. or Majestic Realty's Los Angeles Football Stadium in City of Industry)is going to possibly be built per the NFL. And also per the NFL, that stadium would have to house two teams. The Raiders can stay in their own Bay Area market and share the Santa Clara facility with the 49ers rather than face a HUGE relocation fee, and have to share a facility down South. Doesn't make much sense at all.

I just read the article in the Wed, Feb 20 Contra Costa Times about efforts to retain Oakland teams.

The facts are difficult to avoid: Warriors are GONE.
A's want to leave; issue is when not whether they will stay.
That leaves the Raiders.
Withonly 8 regular season games & a dysfunctional management & operation, they are not the "viable anchor tenant" one would want.
The best spot for the Raiders would be near the intersetion of I-580 & I-680 in Dublin area. Raiders have scouted that area before.

Most importantly ... even if financial resources were available for the City of Oakland / corporate & NFL support ... who wants to go the Coliseum area?

Not me. I could afford season tix / box but I won't take my family there. Who wants to be exposed to the crime in the area? Not my family.

The best bet for the Raiders is back in LA. This assessment by me does not come lightly ... I was there on Day No. 1 (Sept 1960) ... I lived in LA & was season tix holder while the Raiders played at LA Coliseum (lousy neighborhood, also).
Mark lives in LA and spends time there. What's best for the Raiders is to leave town.
Conclusion: Save Oakland Sports should change Line No. 1 of its Mission Statement which reads: "To convince the Raiders, A’s and Warriors to stay long-term and build world-class stadiums in Oakland."
"...It ain't gonna happen..."

I can see why an effort is needed to keep the A's and Raiders, and Coliseum City is a great idea. But, if we don't save Oakland first, there's no sports to save. Why kissing the Warriors butt? They have been here for more than 35 years, and even after remodeling the downtown convention center, they NEVER took Oakland's name, yet their 1st opportunity to goto SF, they announce their commitment. If anything, negotiating with the Kings before they committed to Seattle, should've been more a priority. If they took the name Sacto all these years, they would've took Oakland

I've been a loyal A's Fan since 1969. There are many A's fans from the North Bay Area - Marin, Sonoma, and Lake Counties as well as Napa and Solano, Yolo and Sacramento Counties. These fans already have a long drive to get to A's games in Oakland. That's why we would hate to see the A's move further south. Regardless of how we feel about Lew Wolff, we fans need to turn out for A's games in 2013 and support our exciting and winning ball team. Any plan that requires Oakland / Alameda County investment needs to have it be shown that the fan base will make it economically viable. Otherwise we will eventually lose the A's. Talk is cheap - showing up to games is expensive, and is the vote that counts.

So City of Oakland is finally doing a study on the Raider only stadium.. listen S.O.S, the Raiders DO NOT WANT TO BE PART OF A REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT in EAST OAKLAND... they just want a new stadium or a updgraded stadium with other needs to make the stadium better... OAKLAND please look at how S.F lost the 49ers to SOUTH Bay.. dont be cheap and have a solid plan on how you can pay your share for the project.. if your really trying to save. sports in OAkland

The Raiders and A's mean a lot to me. They're not just sports teams, they represent something more than that. Oakland has a tradition of having a die-hard sports fanbase (Raider Nation, Right Field Bleachers) and where are they to go if our teams move away? I can't think of the Right Field Bleachers moving to San Jose, and I don't think I'd be willing to go to LA every week to watch a Raiders game in person, since we will have a lot of local blackout problems.

What needs to be done is that the Oakland sports teams need to start getting support from corporations, as Raider Ralph has pointed out. It can't just be fans. If the A's and Raiders move out, rooting for them just won't be the same.

Many medias are saying both the A's and Raiders fans are the most crazy and die-hard fanatic you can see in any sports leagues. And of course, the people in Oakland want to keep this tradition.

GET LOUD OAKLAND!! LET'S DO THE BEST TO KEEP THE RAIDERS AND A'S,AND MAKE OAKLAND THE BEST CITY TO VISIT AND WATCH GOOD SPORTS GAMES.

LET'S GO OAKLAND!!

Wolff, for his part, says he’s interested in reaching a deal. Probably not this deal, though. He probably wants something more along the lines of the three-year deals (plus two one-year options) he bargained for previously. And a $50 million exit penalty is not something I can see either Wolff or MLB approving. To put it in perspective: the A’s haven’t paid $50 million combined in rent since Mt. Davis was built, and that was 17 years ago.

The Coliseum Authority could be playing hardball here, or it could be starting off asking for the moon. It’s the first step of a negotiation that could last all winter, and could get very testy as it moves along. We’re a long way from the situation I described in August, but if that exit penalty is real and the JPA isn’t budging on it, MLB could very well get the impetus it needs to look elsewhere

Dear Oakland City Leaders

Please will you guys just do a Public Vote if you want to provide public funding for the stadiums... there is no way around it and it will be honest to gauge if Oakland/East Bay is willing to sacrifice whatever it takes to keep Raiders, A's and or Warriors here.

Hello Chris,

The groups trying to keep the three NFL clubs in Oakland are all over the East Bay area.

They are full of people trying to do something to get the greedy leagues and owners to stop trying to get these clubs to move out of that city.

Some groups like Save Oakland Sports is big some are doing good and some are small but they all want the teams to stay in Oakland.

There are big powerful groups trying to get these teams out of Oakland and this is why it will take some hard work to make this project work.

The biggest rumors I’m hearing is in RaiderNation. They are writing and Faxing Farmers Insurance and AEG in big piles of complaints. Many believe these two corporations want the Raiders to lose so that buying a stake or becoming owners and relocation will be easier.

They know powerful groups want the Raiders to be owned by wealthier owners and by ‘sucking’ the Raiders will have an excuse to be partnered with or owned by new owners.

The Nation has told Farmers and AEG they won’t support them or any new owners if the Raiders aren’t seriously trying to win in 2012. The team seems to be trying to ‘suck’ for a profit and USC qb Matt Barkley. This isn’t how the Raiders fans will accept a new era and they are really aren’t playing games. They say they will boycott these two companies if they see that the team is purposely trying to lose this year.

I expect a Baltimore like process (assuming Olney is right). An owners vote that paves the way will happen prior to a settlement between the clubs. The league will have all the leverage and will still give the Giants favorable deal.
.
Local media will be stunned when they see that the Giants only legal move was already employed (suing San Jose through a third party).
.
On a side note, after watching the Raiders game on TV, I really hope that the team and the city find a way to keep the team in Oakland. I don’t think much of us are very realistic about how stacked the deck is against Oakland, regardless of how vociferously Oakland proponents may argue against that characterization. Is Oakland going to give the Raiders a deal like what the 49ers got in Santa Clara? While I hope not, it may be the only way to keep the team in the Town and of all teams the one that most feels “Oakland” is the Raiders. The joint was hopping yesterday. I think Dave Stewart said it best when he opined, “Oakland is a football town.”

A’s are profitable because of revenue-sharing. IE, the team loses money but is subsidized by the other teams, an arrangement that really doesn’t work. The A’s are like a chain store that loses money in a chain where the other stores make money. I agree it looks like Wolff is bracing for a legal battle if the decision doesn’t go his way. And if he can’t negotiate a new lease with the Coliseum, then we’re moving to uncharted territory with the team having no place to play after next season. (Thanks, Mr. Selig, for having the courage to solve this problem in a prompt fashion. It’s not like it’s been festering for several years. Oh wait a second – it has.)

This was the part that most piqued my interest in ML’s post:
” the ownership group will put together a lot of upfront equity for Cisco Field, that’s a huge selling point to Selig.”
.
That’s the key to the financial projections that were raised. The less they finance stadium construction up front, the less they are dependent on the long-term financial success from the baseball operation to continue to be successful. If the ownership group decides to pay for stadium construction (or at least a sizable chunk) out of their own considerable resources, then the long-term success and value of the franchise is not in jeopardy because there are no (or at least limited) long-term financial obligations to account for. From baseball’s perspective, that’s as good as a publicly financed stadium because there is no related liability on the team’s balance sheet.
.
But I wonder: could part of the financial assessment that Selig is making possibly include the thought that the city will fund some of the construction as well? It might explain his lack of urgency if he thinks San Jose will eventually get desperate enough to fund some of the construction. I think that’s a non-starter, but who knows what goes on in the mind of Bud.

if San Jose does not work and only if it doesnt.. plz Wolff and Quan.. can you two kiss and make up and build a ballpark at Howard Terminal or next to a renovated football-only Raider coliseum. I feel the city and county can come up with a littl bit of public funding to help the Raiders and A’s out nothing to major 50 mil or something.. but anyway im just saying im ballpark first, it will be great if Mark Davis just decides to stay (lets face it, nobody going to build a losing Raider team a new stadium, only a winning Raider team) and waits a few years till the Raiders turn the corner then yeah i could see work being done on a new stadium and Oracle Arena should be kept update just incase another NBA team could be looking to relocate (bucks, kings, timberwolves)

Hopefully you’ve read LA Times baseball writer Bill Shaikin’s piece on the A’s from last night (I tweeted it shortly after I saw it in Google News). If not, take a few minutes to gather it in and then come back here.

Okay, ready? Let’s do a deep dive into the meaty parts of the column.

There are indications Selig might rule by the end of the year. Yet, rather than say yes or no, Selig appears to be considering a ruling that could challenge both the A’s and Giants to fulfill certain criteria.

“I think there will be an effort to be Solomonesque,” said someone who has spoken with Selig but declined to be identified because of the sensitivity of the issue. “This is not a ‘yes or no’ sort of thing.”

The status quo works just fine for the Giants, but it is corroding the A’s.

Lew Wolff, the A’s owner, won’t say much about the process. But he will say this: If Selig puts conditions on his ruling that require a year or so to fulfill, the waiting game is over.

“That would be a no,” Wolff said. “They might as well just tell us no.”

For instance, the burden could be put on the A’s to guarantee their financial projections. If the A’s move to San Jose, pay to build the ballpark, and come off baseball’s welfare system of revenue sharing, how can the A’s ensure the long-term sustainability of a championship-caliber club?
